I don't think this background is bad at all. Minimal, maybe, but I think it's fitting. They look like they're flying out of a cloud of dust -- maybe during a storm or after an explosion.

Yes, it is a sort of a dust cloud. I think it could've worked on it more, but I did it in 2008, so let it stay how it is. ;)

The BG doesn't seem that lame, could be worse, could be just a plain color
Love the angle and the red glowing areas of the fella on the front, and that face, it's kind of giving a smile, or is just my imagination, also like the job with the shading, i think you could use a little bit more variant with the color shading so it could pop a bit more :).
Yous creatures design are pretty amazing, keep it up!
